Apple Plans Touchscreen MacBook Pro and OLED iPad mini for October 2026

Apple plans to unveil its first touchscreen MacBook Pro models and an OLED iPad mini around October 27, 2026. The upcoming hardware rollout follows an early October smart home event and combines online presentations with in-person media sessions, according to reporting based on industry sources.

Apple is preparing a late-October product launch that breaks a long-standing company tradition against touch-enabled laptops. The upcoming hardware introduction, scheduled for on or around Tuesday, Oct. 27, will feature redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models equipped with touch-enabled OLED displays and lighter chassis designs.

Apple Adds Touchscreens to High-End MacBook Pro

For years, Apple executives resisted putting touch capabilities on laptops. In 2010, late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs called touchscreen laptops ergonomically terrible, while software head Craig Federighi stated in 2018 that he was not into touchscreens on portable computers.

That strategy has shifted as the company prepares to introduce high-end MacBook Pro variants featuring touch-enabled OLED panels. The new laptops are currently being tested with macOS 27.1, which is scheduled for release in late October. The devices are expected to incorporate a new internal component structure that allows them to be significantly lighter than existing mini-LED models, alongside a Dynamic Island interface replacing the traditional display notch.

Processor Configurations and Rumored Names for the OLED Laptops

While initial market rumors pointed to an entirely new “MacBook Ultra” moniker to signify the top-tier position of the touch-enabled notebooks, subsequent reporting indicates that the machines will remain part of the MacBook Pro family. Under the hood, the redesigned laptops are expected to be powered by M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than the newer M6 architecture, as Apple reserves its upcoming M6 line for standard entry-level updates. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo noted on social media that an upcoming OLED MacBook Pro will incorporate a touch panel using on-cell touch technology, building on a track record that includes forecasting foldable device concepts, mixed-reality headsets, and USB-C tablets.

The scheduling creates a distinct choice for professional buyers. While a base M6 MacBook Pro and an M6 iMac are expected to arrive alongside the touch models, higher-end creative professionals working in video production, photo editing, and music production remain the primary audience for the advanced processor and display combinations. The entry-level MacBook Pro gets the M6 chip, while the subsequent high-end M7 Pro and M7 Max processors are not anticipated until 2027. The OLED panels promise enhanced contrast and deep blacks, offering a noticeable upgrade for studio workflows.

Apple Updates iPad Mini with OLED Display

The October 27 showcase follows an earlier smart home presentation on October 13, which introduced a new home hub device, a revamped Apple TV 4K, and a refreshed HomePod mini. Alongside the high-end laptops, Apple plans to update the compact tablet lineup by bringing an OLED display to the iPad mini.

The updated tablet is slated to feature a landscape-oriented FaceTime camera to align with the rest of the iPad lineup, accompanied by a redesigned speaker system. Together, the late-October hardware releases test whether new touch and visual interfaces can capture consumer interest heading into the final quarter of the year.
