Apple Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan acknowledged ongoing shipping delays for the iPhone Duo during an earnings call, stating that supply and demand remain out of balance with delivery estimates stretching into next year, while early owners have reported display issues.
Apple launched the iPhone Duo on October 23, 2026, following preorders that began on October 16. The device starts at $1,999 in the U.S. and £1,999 in the U.K. for the base 256GB model. Despite the steep entry price, demand pushed initial online inventory to sell out within hours of release.
Supply Constraints and Earnings Call Realities
Addressing investors during the company’s fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call on November 2, 2026, Apple Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan discussed the logistical hurdles facing the company’s first foldable device. iPhone Duo is constrained as of today,
Khan said on the call, adding that the ramp is going well, and we’re working hard to get this revolutionary new product into the hands of our customers as quickly as possible. But at this time, it’s really hard to predict when supply and demand will be in balance.

Those delivery bottlenecks have pushed shipping estimates on the Apple Store well into January 2027 for customers who missed initial preorders or failed to secure walk-in stock. According to reporting cited from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple reserved roughly 80 percent of its launch inventory for physical Apple Stores rather than online preorders, leaving individual locations with limited allocations ranging from 50 units at smaller stores up to 250 units at major flagships.
Beyond consumer-facing delays, Apple executives noted that soaring demand for memory chips from the artificial intelligence industry has driven up component costs across hardware manufacturing, prompting the company to raise prices on several product lines.
Hardware Specifications and Early User Reception
The iPhone Duo bridges a 5.4-inch outer OLED display and an expansive 7.6-inch folding inner OLED screen, both supporting 120Hz refresh rates. Apple built the chassis around a mirror-polished titanium frame, bringing the total weight of the device to 254 grams — just 5 grams heavier than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Performance is driven by the Apple A20 Pro processor, matching the chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro. Reviewers testing the device noted that multitasking with Split View runs smoothly without sluggishness, though some users observed that the titanium build retains more warmth during intensive tasks compared to traditional aluminum models.
Display Fragility and Hinge Inquiries
As early adopters put the hardware through daily use, a subset of owners reported encountering cracks along the inner display’s fold, occasionally accompanied by bright lines across the screen. One Australian owner documented damage appearing after fewer than 20 openings and received an immediate device swap at an Apple Store.

Apple acknowledged the reports, stating that the issue affects a small number of units and advising customers experiencing screen difficulties to contact AppleCare for a replacement. While the company has not established a formal repair program or confirmed the root cause, an iFixit teardown simulation indicated that internal support structures near the flexible cable transition may place undue pressure on the folding screen.
Addressing the return rates during communications with Reuters, Apple CEO John Ternus confirmed that a very small percentage
of units have been returned due to display and hinge concerns. Repair pricing for out-of-warranty damage varies significantly: replacing the inner screen’s protective cover layer costs $49 without AppleCare+, whereas repairing physical damage to the inner display itself runs $999 without coverage.
Ecosystem Adaptation and Developer Response
Third-party developers have moved quickly to optimize software for the foldable canvas. Applications ranging from productivity tools like WPS Office and Xmind to entertainment platforms including Netflix have rolled out interface adjustments that scale across the device’s unfolded postures.
The response to iPhone Duo from our developer community has been incredible, and we’re inspired by how quickly they’ve embraced its larger display and new ways to interact.

Concurrently, accessory makers have introduced dedicated hardware to complement the folding form factor, including the iPhone Duo Case priced at $79/£79 and the Duo Folio with Kickstand retailing at $129/£129.
