Universidad Nacional de Córdoba Hosts Albert Einstein Award

For the first time in its four-decade history, the Albert Einstein World Award of Science is coming to South America. The Universidad Nacional de Córdoba in Argentina will host the 41st edition of the ceremony on November 2, 2026, honoring paleoanthropologist Katerina Harvati for her pioneering work on human origins.

The Albert Einstein World Award of Science breaks a decades-long tradition of hosting its annual galas exclusively in institutions across the northern hemisphere. Established in 1982, the prize is administered by the World Cultural Council to champion sustainable development, education, peace, and social justice while building bridges among academic institutions worldwide.

This year marks a definitive turning point for the prize’s global footprint. By choosing the university, the international committee brings the spotlight directly to the southern hemisphere.

Katerina Harvati and the Evolution of Modern Humanity

The recipient of the 2026 prize, Greek paleoanthropologist Katerina Harvati, has spent her career reshaping our understanding of human evolution. Currently directing the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, Harvati was among the earliest researchers to apply 3D geometric morphometrics to the human fossil record.

That analytical approach has since become standard practice across the field. Her investigations have yielded fresh evidence regarding modern human origins in North Africa and their early dispersal toward southern Europe, while helping clarify whether Neandertals constituted a distinct species or belonged to Homo sapiens. With more than 180 peer-reviewed publications and over 17,500 citations, her virtual fossil reconstruction techniques have unlocked entirely new avenues for anthropological inquiry.

The formal presentation takes place at the Teatro del Libertador General San Martín, with live coverage managed by SRT Media through Canal 10 and YouTube. Alongside the main award, the host university is conferring an honorary doctorate on Harvati.

The academic programming continues the following day with keynote lectures and collaborative meetings held at the Centro Cultural UNC. These sessions aim to connect international perspectives with the regional academic community.

Twelve Local Researchers and Students Recognized

In parallel with the international award, the World Cultural Council and a nomination list compiled by the Foro de Rectores de Córdoba are honoring 12 local scientific figures across three distinct tiers: established career scientists, early-career researchers, and current students.
