Health has become a priority for the world’s leading technology companies. It is not only a way to impact and improve people’s quality of life, but also an attractive business. For this reason, there are more and more teams with functions to identify different diseases. The best example is the Apple Watch because it is an increasingly complete device and one of its future innovations would be a glucose meter.

Evolution over the years

By way of hindsight, it was in 2014 when the first version of this smartwatch was released. At the beginning, its applications were quite limited, but as the years went by, new functions were incorporated. In this way it went from being a portable computer more to become the best seller in the world.

The biggest change came when Apple showed interest in adding health-related features. Eventually, applications have been incorporated that are now useful both for the general population and for doctors.

While the highest point of technological evolution came in 2022 with the launch of the Apple Watch Series 8. Now it is not only a smart watch but it has many functions that elevate it to the level of a professional medical device.

Among the most recent additions, the one of oximetry to measure the level of oxygen in the blood. Especially since the start of the pandemic, it has become one of the most useful characteristics to identify possible cases of Covid-19 from its first manifestations.

The new surprise that Apple has prepared?

But as with all technological equipment, there are no limits because you can always innovate and add new features. With this in mind, the The next generation of the Apple Watch would have a special feature and it would be a glucose meter.

According to the Applesfera portal, everything stems from the fact that Apple patented a system that, using electromagnetic waves, can calculate the amount of glucose in the blood.

In fact, in 2019 the company launched One Drop on the market. It is a novel glucose meter that is compatible with the Apple Watch and the iPhone. Its main advantage is that it offers accurate and reliable results in a maximum of five seconds.

The device includes a lancet, tester, and strips. At the same time, it also allows you to wirelessly sync all the data generated from the measurement to other Apple devices.

From the above, now the objective is that the function of glucose meter is directly available in the new version of Apple Watch. In this way, additional equipment would not be required. With this it would be a great technological step because it would become the first smartwatch in the world with this function.

This feature would be very useful for countries like Mexico facing a severe crisis of type 2 diabetes. Currently there are at least nine million people diagnosed although the number could be much higher.

In this sense, one of the biggest drawbacks is that many people take years to know their condition. The main reason is the lack of regular medical consultations. On the other hand, now everything could be simpler because it would only take a Apple Watch and use your glucose meter to find out if someone has diabetes mellitus.
