Apple Watch watchOS 27.3 Beta Introduces Siri Recap

Apple has launched its first developer beta of watchOS 27.3, introducing “Siri Recap” and “Live Rewind”—two new Audio Intelligence features for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 that record and summarize ambient conversations.

The new features, which arrived in the first watchOS 27.3 developer beta on November 3, allow users to catch spoken details they may have missed. MacRumors reports that Live Rewind enables users to view a text snippet of the previous 15 seconds of speech by double-pressing the Digital Crown.

Activating this feature triggers an audible chime, a full-screen animation, and a microphone indicator to alert those nearby, even if the watch is in silent mode. Siri Recap operates differently by working in the background to create high-level summaries of conversations throughout the day.

9to5Mac notes that these summaries, which include a title and key points, are stored in the Siri app and auto-delete after seven days unless a user chooses to save them. Users can manage these settings through the Watch app on iPhone or via the Control Center on the watch itself.

According to AndroidPure, the features require an Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4 paired with an iPhone 16 series or newer, excluding the iPhone 16e. Additionally, the devices must have Apple Intelligence and Siri AI enabled. The features are currently available in English only, and users under 13 are excluded from using them.

Privacy Claims Face Legal Scrutiny

Apple maintains that these tools are designed to protect user privacy. The company states that the system does not record or store raw audio files, which are processed in a hardware-isolated compartment called the Secure Exclave on the S11 chip and then immediately deleted.

Iclarified reports that Siri Recap is designed to omit sensitive information, such as financial data or government identifiers, though Apple admits its automated filters may not be perfect. F. Mario Trujillo told Bloomberg Law that Because I want to live in a world where I can trust that the people I’m having conversations with aren’t secretly documenting them, adding that if this becomes the new social normal, it could change human interaction in undesirable ways.

Bloomberg Law reports that approximately a dozen US states require the consent of all parties before a conversation can be recorded. Calli Schroeder noted that because the Recap feature operates without a visual or sound alert, the burden falls on the user to obtain consent from those being recorded. Calli Schroeder says that the privacy angle is a big part of Apple’s marketing appeal.

Everyday Testing Shows Mixed Utility

A TechCrunch report found the feature useful for capturing verbal details during fast-paced interactions, such as car repair estimates or rental car policies. Testing of the Siri Recap feature has shown practical benefits for managing daily information. However, the reporter noted that the AI sometimes mixed essential information with non-essential domestic chatter, such as discussions about television programs or family errands.

Jennifer King told Bloomberg Law that And if that becomes the new normal of our social life, if we’re conscious that our words or actions are being recorded, it really could change how we interact with each other in ways that I’m not sure we want. She suggested that employers or social venues might eventually ban the devices to protect social dynamics or sensitive information. Apple Watch models previously lacked direct ambient recording capabilities before this developer release.
