‘Gora Mosque’ of Kaliganj Upazila in Jhenaidah is an archaeological monument of Bangladesh. The mosque is located in Belat Daulatpur village of Barobazar union, about 25 km from the upazila headquarters. Its shape is square.

A Sufi named Gohai lived in the mosque. As its name suggests, it is known as the ‘Gora Masjid’. A grave discovered next to the mosque is believed by the locals to be the grave of a dervish.

There is a large pond on the east side of the mosque. Although now the Pond Ghat has been destroyed. Originally the mosque had only one dome. Later two small domes were made. In 1983, its excavations started in Barobazar under the Directorate of Archeology of Bangladesh. At that time, this mosque was also discovered along with several other mosques. Soon after the discovery, this mosque was placed on the archaeological list.

According to the archeology department, the Gogai mosque was most likely built during the reign of Hussain Shah or his son Nasrat Shah. The walls of the mosque are at least five feet thick. There are three entrances to the mosque, of which the middle entrance is larger than the other two. It is believed that there were a total of four entrances, two each in the north and south walls of the mosque, which no longer exist. Apart from the eastern side wall, four black stone pillars are found on the remaining three side walls. The outer wall of the mosque is completely decorated with terracotta work. The mosque is a stunning and unique example of Muslim architecture.

A person named Akidul Islam told Jago News, ‘I came here from Jhenaidah city to pray. After praying, I will go back to Jhenaidah’s house. There is great self-satisfaction by praying in the mosque. It is very comfortable to pray here.’

Local Mustafa Kamal said, ‘The mosque was found 700-800 years ago. This is how the mosque works. Those that were broken were later repaired. Many people gather here constantly.’

Another person named Jehan Uddin said, “The mosque at the beginning is very beautiful.” We locals come here daily to pray. Apart from praying, many visitors from far and wide come here to see the mosque. Many claim that it was made during the Mughal period.

Speaking to the imam of the mosque, Rakib Ahmed, it is said that the mosque was buried when it was discovered. There was no way to understand that there was a mosque below because of the forest and vegetation above. At that time, people used to pray around the mosque. One day Pir Abu Bakr Siddique of Furfura Sharif (RA) came here. Then he said there is a mosque here. You all pray here instead of praying around. Since then everyone started praying here.
