Area Süd Marathon 2026: Run a Marathon Across Two Austrian Races

by ethan.brook News Editor

A new running challenge is coming to Austria in 2026, combining the popular Kärnten Läuft – Wörthersee Half Marathon and the Graz Marathon into a single, innovative event: the Area Süd Marathon. The concept, unveiled at a press conference in Graz, allows runners to complete a full marathon distance over two separate races, appealing to both seasoned marathoners and those new to the 42.2-kilometer distance.

The Area Süd Marathon will begin with the Wörthersee Half Marathon, part of Kärnten Läuft, on August 30, 2026. Runners will then complete the second half of the marathon at the Hervis Half Marathon, held as part of the Graz Marathon on October 11, 2026. The combined times from both races will determine the overall marathon finish time. This unique format aims to reimagine the traditional marathon experience, offering a more accessible and flexible approach to the demanding distance.

A Marathon Bridging Nature and City

The Area Süd Marathon distinguishes itself by blending two distinct running environments. The Wörthersee Half Marathon promises a scenic route along the shores of Wörthersee, known for its stunning turquoise waters and summer atmosphere. Six weeks later, the Graz Marathon will take runners through the heart of the Styrian capital, passing landmarks like the opera house and the historic old town. This contrast – lake and city, summer and autumn – is central to the event’s appeal.

The Koralmbahn: Connecting Runners and Regions

Facilitating this two-stage marathon is the new Koralmbahn railway, which will connect Graz and Klagenfurt in approximately 45 minutes once fully operational. The railway is intended to create a new sporting axis in southern Austria and simplify travel for participants. A particularly convenient feature for runners utilizing the train will be the ability to collect their start numbers directly onboard, streamlining the race day experience.

Julia Mayer Backs the New Challenge

The Area Süd Marathon has garnered support from prominent figures in the Austrian running community, including marathon record holder Julia Mayer, who will serve as a testimonial for the event. Mayer is also slated to participate in the half marathons at both Kärnten Läuft and the Graz Marathon, according to organizers.

The Area Süd Marathon is designed to appeal to a wide range of runners, from experienced marathoners seeking a new challenge to those looking to gradually work their way up to the full distance. The innovative format offers a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of southern Austria while pushing personal limits.
