“I Can’t Go On Team Now”: Contestant’s Moral Stand Sparks Outrage on “I’m a Celebrity”
A contestant’s refusal to participate in a jungle challenge due to moral objections has ignited controversy on the reality show “I’m a Celebrity – Get Me Out of Here!”, resulting in food rations being lost and a wave of criticism from both fellow campers and viewers. Ariel, 22, has once again found herself at the center of conflict, declining a challenge on Monday after previously canceling one the day before.
A Unique Refusal Rooted in Personal Values
This instance marks an unprecedented turn in the show’s history. Unlike previous refusals stemming from fear or disgust, Ariel’s decision was driven by a fundamental disagreement with the character of her assigned teammates, Eva Benetatou, 33, and Gil Ofarim, 43. “Everyone in the team is hungry and I’m incredibly sorry, but I’m standing up for myself,” Ariel stated. “It’s not possible to form a team with people who don’t even come close to representing my moral values.”
The catalyst for Ariel’s refusal was a comment made by Eva regarding Ariel’s daughter. According to reports, Eva remarked, “You like to step on people who are already down. If you want to pass on these values to your daughter, then I feel sorry for you.” Ariel also expressed an inability to collaborate with Gil, citing his past legal issues. She referenced his confession in November 2023 to falsely accusing a hotel employee of anti-Semitism, stating, “What he did… I can’t do it on the team now.”
Fan Backlash and Calls for Stricter Rules
The decision has been met with widespread disapproval. Social media platforms are flooded with negative reactions, with one Instagram user commenting, “Anyone who still celebrates Ariel after this broadcast can no longer be helped. Simply unbearable.” Entertainer Julian FM Stoeckel, a former jungle camp participant himself, expressed a similar sentiment on Instagram, stating, “It’s so terrible that you find Eva likeable in moments like this.”
However, a small contingent of viewers defended Ariel’s stance, with one writing, “I think it’s great that Ariel refused the test with the two of them and therefore didn’t give them any airtime. I also love how true she remains to herself.”
The controversy has also sparked calls for rule changes. Several viewers have proposed stricter penalties for refusing challenges, including elimination from the camp or financial deductions. “Hey RTL, how about a new rule: Anyone who drops out/refuses three times will be kicked out of the camp?” one Instagram user suggested. Another proposed, “New rules please! Refusal = fee deduction! Failed three times = out!”
A History of Challenge Difficulties
This isn’t Ariel’s first struggle with the show’s challenges. Prior to her conscientious objection, she abandoned a previous exam and offered no assistance during a team challenge with Hubert Fella, 58, simply screaming instead of searching for stars hidden amongst unpleasant creatures. The result was a complete failure, yielding zero stars for the team.
Despite the ongoing drama, Ariel has been given another opportunity to prove herself. In Tuesday’s episode, she will face a jungle test alone, sent by viewers of the show.
