Arkansas Earns Top Ranking as Most Pro-Life State for Sixth Consecutive Year

Arkansas has once again been recognized as the most pro-life state in the nation, marking the sixth year in a row it has earned the distinction according to annual rankings released by Americans United for Life. The announcement, made on Monday, underscores the state’s commitment to policies protecting vulnerable populations, from the unborn to the elderly and disabled.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders joined representatives from Americans United for Life and the Arkansas family Council to celebrate the achievement. “Pro-life is whole life, and I’m proud that for the past six years, Arkansas has ranked number one in the nation – not just in protecting the unborn, but in preserving life from conception to natural conclusion,” Governor Sanders stated. She further emphasized her dedication to continuing this work throughout her administration, advocating for the protection of the state’s most vulnerable citizens.
The ranking by Americans United for Life considers state laws designed to safeguard the unborn, the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and those facing terminal illness. Jerry cox,President of the Arkansas Family Council,celebrated the recognition,stating,”Arkansans should be proud of their state legislators for passing the best laws in the nation when it comes to protecting unborn children,the elderly,the disabled,and the terminally ill. That’s something to celebrate.“
A History of Pro-Life Legislation in Arkansas
Arkansas has a long-standing history of enacting legislation aimed at protecting human life. As the 1973 roe v.Wade decision, the state has passed over 65 laws affirming the dignity of human life. A notable milestone was reached in 2021 with the passage of a law prohibiting abortion except to save the mother’s life. This law went into effect following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Center in 2022, which overturned roe.
Governor Sanders has continued to strengthen these protections through recent legislative actions. These include Act 973 of 2025, which prohibits abortions performed due to an unborn child’s race, and Act 485 of 2025, which prohibits administering abortion drugs to pregnant women without their informed consent. Additional measures, Acts 1006 of 2025, Act 125 of 2024, and Act 622 of 2023, allocate $5 million in funding to support women experiencing unplanned pregnancies.
Expanding support for Families and Children
Beyond abortion restrictions, the Sanders administration has focused on bolstering support systems for families and children. An executive Order was signed early in her term to convene foster care advocates and develop recommendations for improving the state’s foster care system. This initiative has been coupled with a $1 million increase to the foster placement budget. Consequently, Arkansas has achieved a historic low, with fewer than 200 children currently awaiting adoption – the lowest number recorded since data collection began.
Furthermore, Governor Sanders signed the Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies Act in 2025, directing $45 million towards promoting maternal health. These efforts demonstrate a extensive approach to supporting life at all stages.
The Governor’s broader agenda includes initiatives focused on education reform, providing food assistance to struggling families, and the 10:33 Initiative, which unites faith-based organizations, nonprofits, and goverment entities to help Arkansans transition from crisis to sustainable careers.
