On display in Monza, until November 26, the works of the Milanese master Mario Arlati, halfway between painting, sculpture and installation. With waste clothes and his attention to ecology and sustainability, Arlati creates large material works and his ‘quadroni’ now stand out in the white museum space of the Teatrino di Corte of the Reggia di Monza, redeveloped in 2019, in the exhibition “Mario Arlati. The matter of art”, promoted by the M.Ar.Co. association.

Born in Milan in 1947, Arlati, after his figurative beginnings, dedicated himself to material informal art in the 1970s. Represented exclusively by the Contini gallery in Venice and Cortina d’Ampezzo, the Milanese artist is defined by the gallerist Stefano Contini as “the poet of matter” for his ability to shape objects, even those of common use, as Libero writes, who today dedicates a long article on the Milanese artist and on the exhibition which hosts, in addition to the large monochrome or harlequin works, also the work that reproduces the UN flag, created in the context of the “Flag” project.

In particular, last July 20th, at the Carrobiolo educational center in Monza, a creative workshop dedicated to young people with disabilities and relational problems was held, and Arlati, on the initiative of his friend Maurizio Caldirola, contributed to the workshop by creating a work which symbolizes the unity between the different realities of the participants. During the event, the newspaper reconstructs, “the children painted the United Nations flag on a canvas made with recycled materials, promoting the circular economy and raising awareness of the sustainable development objectives of the UN Agenda 2030. Arlati explains that the flag will then be exhibited at the Farnesina, at the Ministry of Labour, in Dubai and in New York. The experience with the young people was, as always, engaging, satisfying but also difficult. The artist would have liked to offer a symbolic compensation to one of the most engaged in the project, but he refused because he was happy that someone had believed in him for the first time. In 2019 Arlati’s colored flags, his heartfelt homage to Jasper Johns and for him the symbol of a new artistic message, illuminated the bell tower of San Marco, icon of the city of Venice, symbolizing the heterogeneous flow of guests who animate the Serenissima”.
