The President’s Office informs:

“The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Greece to Armenia Christos Sofianopoulos presented his credentials to the President of the Republic Vahagn Khachaturyan.

President Khachaturyan congratulated the newly appointed ambassador on assuming the post and expressed hope that Christos Sofianopoulos will make maximum efforts to expand and develop the existing good cooperation between the two countries.

President Khachaturyan spoke with satisfaction about Armenian-Greek relations based on close historical friendship and solidarity, noting that there is a multi-sector bilateral agenda and effective political dialogue between the two countries.

“Greece has always been by our side in difficult times, and on behalf of myself and the Armenian people, I express gratitude for the support shown by the Greek government and authorities in these difficult times facing our country,” the president said.

Ambassador Sofianopoulos thanked for the reception and emphasized his willingness to make efforts to strengthen and develop cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting, South Caucasian regional realities and recent developments were discussed, as well as existing security challenges and ways to face them.

In his speech, President Vahagn Khachaturyan emphasized that Armenia is committed to its principled position of normalizing relations with its neighbors and achieving stable and lasting peace, within the framework of international legal norms, territorial integrity of countries and fundamental rights of sovereignty. Both sides emphasized the importance of solving the problems through peaceful negotiations and excluding the military threat.

During the conversation, issues regarding multi-layered interaction between Armenia and Greece were also discussed. The importance of intensifying efforts aimed at fully realizing the potential of expanding economic cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the field of high technologies, was emphasized. Reference was also made to the agenda issues of effective cooperation between Armenia-Greece-Cyprus.

The President of the Republic, in the person of the ambassador, conveyed his thanks to the Greek government and authorities for the humanitarian support provided by the Greek side to the forcibly displaced people from Nagorno Karabakh.

The high level of political dialogue between Armenia and Greece, as well as the close cooperation in the European Union and other international platforms, were emphasized at the meeting.

During the conversation, reference was also made to the reforms and principled approaches in Armenia in recent years in the direction of strengthening democracy and establishing democratic institutions.”
