Armenian Defense Ministry calls unsettled situation on border with Azerbaijan

by time news

The armed forces of Azerbaijan still remain on the territory of the Syunik and Gegharkunik regions of Armenia, the Ministry of Defense of the republic said.

“As of the morning of May 15, the situation that arose after the invasion of the Azerbaijani armed forces on May 12-13 to certain border areas of the Syunik and Gegharkunik regions of Armenia under the pretext of“ adjusting the border ”has not been resolved. Despite the fact that as a result of the actions of the Armenian units, the Azerbaijani military were forced to leave some units, some of them are still on the territory of the republic, ”the message says.

The country’s defense ministry called Azerbaijan’s actions “absolutely unacceptable” and stated the need for a peaceful settlement of the situation.

Earlier in Armenia, it was reported that the Azerbaijani armed forces on May 13 tried to advance their posts on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in the areas of the cities of Vardenis and Sisian in southern Armenia. The Armenian military claims that the Azerbaijani servicemen have penetrated more than 3 km into the territory of the country.

Acting Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan later clarified that a unit of the Azerbaijani army consisting of about 250 servicemen violated the Armenian state border in the area of Lake Sevlich between the Syunik region of Armenia and the Lachin region of Azerbaijan. From this Azerbaijani region, which for more than 26 years was controlled by the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), Armenia previously withdrew its troops after the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. This decision was made after the agreements between Yerevan and Baku with the mediation of Moscow in November 2020.

Baku stated that they are deploying their border guards in the process of demarcating the border between the two states in accordance with the available maps, calling Yerevan’s reaction “inadequate” and designed for an internal audience on the eve of the parliamentary elections. At the same time, Azerbaijan recognized that due to the fact that the border between the countries has not been demarcated since Soviet times, the parties may have different opinions about its passage.
