Liverpool in Crisis? Arne Slot Under Pressure as Reds Face Tumultuous 2025-26 Season

Liverpool supporters are grappling with a stark reality: just one year after Premier League glory, the club finds itself in a precarious position. A crushing 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday has intensified scrutiny on manager Arne Slot, raising questions about his future at Anfield.

The loss extended Liverpool’s dismal run to six defeats in their last seven matches across all competitions, a dramatic downturn following a summer transfer window that saw the club spend a staggering £450 million on new talent. Prior to the November international break, the team also suffered a 3-0 loss to Manchester City, further compounding concerns.

Slot’s Rocky Start to Title Defense

Slot, 47, enjoyed a dream first year succeeding Jurgen Klopp, delivering the Premier League title to Anfield. However, the 2025-26 campaign has presented a stark contrast. Saturday’s result has sparked fresh debate about the Dutchman’s ability to turn the tide.

“We have to give credit to Forest for what they are doing but yes, the wheels are coming off now for Arne Slot,” noted a pundit on Final Score following the match. The analyst pointed to the significant investment in players – £450 million – and the team’s subsequent decline, stating they have been “simply undone.” The situation is “certainly a major problem for the manager to go six defeats from seven,” they added.

Despite the current struggles, some voices remain optimistic. Another pundit argued, “I don’t think you can win the league one year and get sacked the next.” They emphasized the remarkable nature of Liverpool’s fall from grace, highlighting that losing so many games early in the season – currently eight points behind the league leaders – is “unthinkable” given their recent success.

A former Liverpool midfielder echoed this sentiment, suggesting a need for patience. “Right now, I think it’s a time for patience because there’ll be people, pundits, everyone going crazy, [saying] ‘Sack the manager’. [Be] calm, take your time, make sure you assess it, it’s been the most difficult pre-season you can imagine for those players.”

Klopp’s Shadow Looms Large

Adding to the pressure on Slot is the persistent speculation surrounding a potential return for former manager Jurgen Klopp. The German is currently the bookmakers’ favorite to replace Slot should the owners decide to make a change, with odds as low as 2/1.

Other names in contention include Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, Aston Villa’s Unai Emery, and Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann. However, there is currently no indication that Liverpool’s owners are actively pursuing a managerial change.

Klopp himself has fueled the speculation, stating in October that if he were to return to England, it would be to Liverpool. “I said I would never coach a different team in England. So that means if, (I did return to England) then it’s Liverpool. Yeah, theoretically it’s possible,” he said. However, he also expressed contentment with his current role as Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull and his involvement with the German Football League (DFL).

Despite the rumors, Klopp has publicly backed Slot, describing him as a “super good guy” who “got the best out of this team, and they became champions in an incredible manner.”

The situation at Anfield is undeniably tense. While the club’s owners have not signaled any immediate plans to replace Slot, the mounting pressure and the looming presence of a legendary former manager create a challenging environment as Liverpool attempts to salvage its 2025-26 season.
