In an interview with the Azerbaijani newspaper “Echo” (“Эхо”), Armenian Grandmaster Levon Aronian summarized his performances in the Candidates Tournament. Aronian’s interview is presented by allsport.am.
“My main goal was to win the first place, but I didn’t succeed. I think there were many key moments in the tournament in the fight for the first place. Of course, the defeat against Piotr Svidler was decisive for me. I played terribly there, and only after the match, analyzing my game, I was very dissatisfied with my performance.
Of course, I was sad that I couldn’t take the first place, but I can’t say that I deserved to win with my game. Overall, I played poorly. It is true that I did not perform so badly in the first round, but there was also a second round in the tournament,” said Aronian.
He was also asked whether the participation of the Azerbaijani national team in the 2014 World Championship in Yerevan could influence Armenia’s decision to participate in the Baku Olympics.
“It will certainly be a move that will please all of us. Now I can’t say what will happen if the Azerbaijani team participates in the 2014 World Championship in Yerevan. It’s hard for me to speak for the entire team. In our country, as I said before, they hope that we will go to Baku, because we want to be in the capital of Azerbaijan. At the same time, we have to look at things objectively, the results of recent years show that things are not so smooth between us,” Aronian added.
