What are the main challenges facing the Khofifah-Emil candidacy in East Java’s upcoming election?
Interview Between Time.news Editor and Political Analyst Dr. Rina Soesanto
Time.news Editor (TNE): Good afternoon, Dr. Soesanto! Thank you for joining us today.
Dr. Rina Soesanto (RS): Good afternoon! It’s a pleasure to be here.
TNE: Today, we want to discuss the recent support expressed by the Prabowo Gibran Volunteer Alliance for the Khofifah Indra Parawansa-Emil Dardak candidacy for the Governor and Deputy Governor of East Java. What do you make of this endorsement?
RS: This endorsement is quite significant. With 58 volunteer organizations behind them, it demonstrates a united front and substantial grassroots support for Khofifah and Emil as they campaign for the upcoming election.
TNE: What impact do you think this alliance could have on the election in East Java?
RS: A strong volunteer alliance can mobilize voters effectively, especially in a region as populous as East Java. Their support not only builds credibility for Khofifah and Emil but also helps them tap into a network of committed individuals who can spread their message and encourage voter turnout.
TNE: Indeed, connecting with local communities is crucial. How do you see the dynamics in this particular race, given the historical context of elections in East Java?
RS: Traditionally, East Java has shown a mix of political allegiances, with strong influences from both national parties and local figures. Khofifah has a substantial political background and has served as the governor previously, giving her an edge in terms of recognition and experience. Emil Dardak also brings a young perspective, which can attract younger voters. Their partnership seems well-calibrated to appeal to a broad demographic.
TNE: That’s interesting. As we observe the political landscape, what do you think the key issues will be in this election that candidates need to address?
RS: Key issues likely include economic development, education, and health services—especially after the pandemic. Additionally, as East Java is known for its diverse cultures, candidates must also address local governance and inclusivity. The dynamics of urban vs. rural needs will play a crucial role as well.
TNE: How do you think the endorsement by ARPG shapes the public perception of Khofifah and Emil?
RS: It brands them as a serious contender with strong grassroots support, which can combat any doubts regarding their capacity to govern. However, public perception will greatly depend on how well they communicate their vision for the region and how they carry out their campaigns in the coming weeks.
TNE: That makes sense. Lastly, in terms of campaigning, what strategies do you think Khofifah and Emil should prioritize to maximize their voter outreach?
RS: They should leverage digital platforms to reach out to younger voters while also maintaining strong local campaign strategies involving grassroots mobilization. Engaging with community leaders and addressing local needs in their campaign rhetoric will also resonate well with voters. Authenticity and responsiveness to constituents’ concerns will be their biggest assets.
TNE: Thank you, Dr. Soesanto! Your insights on this electoral landscape are invaluable. We look forward to seeing how the election unfolds in East Java.
RS: Thank you for having me! It’s always a pleasure to discuss these important topics.
