Arrow McLaren Extends Multiyear Engine Agreement With Chevrolet

Our extension with Chevrolet is key to our overall goal of winning both the INDYCAR championship and the Indy 500, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown said in a statement highlighting a major continuity milestone for the Yahoo.

The Arrow McLaren IndyCar Team announced a multiyear extension with Chevrolet to remain its exclusive engine manufacturer, locking in a technical partnership as the NTT INDYCAR SERIES prepares for upcoming vehicle regulations. The agreement guarantees that Chevrolet power will continue to sit behind the driver compartment through the introduction of the series’ next-generation platform.

Chevrolet Engines Power Dallara IR-28 Era

The timing of the contract extension coincides with early testing phases for the Dallara IR-28 chassis, which is scheduled to make its competitive debut during the 2028 season. According to team announcements, the incoming platform will feature an upgraded power-to-weight ratio, revised aerodynamic architecture, specialized wing packages designed to promote better racing, and enhanced safety systems.

The 2028 transition will also introduce a new 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. General Motors and Honda have been actively collaborating to finish developing and agreeing upon the technical regulations for these new power units, with manufacturers slated to test the IR-28 chassis on track in the months following the announcement.

The relationship we have with Chevy is the strongest it’s ever been, and the team is already looking forward to how we’re able to keep building on-track performance together, especially as we develop the new chassis for the 2028 season, Arrow McLaren Team Principal Tony Kanaan said. Long-term alignment with Chevrolet increases our stability and shared focus, and this partnership allows our engineers and Chevy’s engineers to have stronger collaboration during this period of major technical change.

McLaren and Chevrolet Secure Victories in IndyCar

McLaren Racing originally entered IndyCar full-time in 2020 by partnering with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports to form Arrow McLaren SP, maintaining Chevrolet engines throughout the tenure. Over their seven seasons together, the collaborative program has secured 14 victories, 54 podium finishes, and 13 pole awards—referred to as NTT P1 Awards in series competition.

Chevrolet utilized support from its top-tier partner teams to capture three consecutive Manufacturers’ Championships from 2022 through 2024. Additionally, the manufacturer boasts 13 historical victories at the Indianapolis 500, marking the third-highest win total for an engine manufacturer across the race’s 110-year history.

During the 18-race 2026 schedule, Arrow McLaren finished as the top-performing Chevrolet team in 11 races. Driver Christian Lundgaard completed every single lap of the season, while teammate Pato O’Ward finished all but a single lap.

Driver Roster Changes Ahead of 2027 Campaign

The engine news arrives as Arrow McLaren prepares for a roster shakeup ahead of the 2027 season. Pato O’Ward will anchor the squad alongside six-time series champion Scott Dixon and Felix Rosenqvist, who joins the team following a victory at the 2026 Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge.

Arrow McLaren has been an important part of Chevrolet’s INDYCAR program, and this extension reflects the strength of the technical relationship we’ve built together, said Eric Warren, General Motors vice president of global motorsports competition. As the series moves toward the next generation of car and powertrain development, close collaboration between our engineers will be critical. We continue to share a clear objective with Arrow McLaren: to keep raising the performance of the Chevrolet package and compete for wins, championships and the Indianapolis 500.
