Art Basel Paris Opens at Grand Palais Despite Protests

Art Basel Paris opened its VIP preview at the Grand Palais under tight security on October 20, 2026, welcoming international collectors amid ongoing street protests across France.

The Belle Epoque splendor of the Grand Palais played host to the annual Avant-Premiere preview on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Organizers implemented reinforced safety protocols following days of civil unrest, riots, and looting across Paris and other French cities.

Security Measures at the Grand Palais

Ahead of the opening, fair teams communicated with guests to detail comprehensive security arrangements. On Sunday, Art Basel reassured invitees that the Grand Palais was surrounded by anti-ram barriers and 24-hour security patrols.

The social climate driving these precautions culminated from weeks of mostly peaceful anti-government demonstrations across the country, set off by students aggrieved by the conditions at their high schools. The crowd grew as demonstrators were reinforced by frustrated citizens frustrated by the escalating cost of living and additional complaints, alongside individuals focused on committing vandalism. By Monday, the unrest had mostly subsided, although the damp Paris air still carried faint traces of smoke from ruined automobiles, retail stores, and electric bicycles. Meanwhile, art students demonstrated their backing by barring access to the Louvre museum, causing its closure.

The pictures of the riots were so scary.

Exhibitors Dismiss Concerns over Civil Unrest

New York-based exhibitor Fergus McCaffrey dismissed concerns surrounding the civil unrest.

The media have blown this out of all proportion.

McCaffrey stated that Headlines like ‘France in Flames’ were a complete misrepresentation, adding that he had seen the key American clients he had expected and stating simply, Everyone came. Karim Crippa of the event, cited the historic motto of Paris to illustrate the resolve to maintain the schedule as planned.

Exhibitors brought high-value modern and contemporary pieces, building on a market where two paintings sold for more than US$20 million each during the previous year.
