SAPS Opens Recruitment for 5,500 Trainees With Applications Closing on November 13
The South African Police Service launched its nationwide online recruitment drive for the 2026/2027 financial year, seeking 5,500 entry-level trainees to bolster law enforcement across the country. Applications opened on October 21 and are scheduled to close on November 13. The campaign invites young, service-driven individuals to pursue a career in policing.
National police spokesperson Colonel Amanda van Wyk urged eligible candidates to step forward. This is an opportunity for young, patriotic and service-driven South Africans aged 18 to under 35 to turn their passion for making a difference into a meaningful career in policing,
she said, as reported by IOL.
Eligibility Requirements and Specialized Placement Tracks for Graduates
Applicants must be South African citizens aged between 18 and under 35, hold a Grade 12 or equivalent qualification, and have no criminal records or pending criminal cases.
Graduates holding higher qualifications may find specialized placement opportunities. Van Wyk noted that applicants with specific credentials will be considered for distinct units.
SAPS will identify suitably qualified applicants with specific skills for consideration in specialised policing environments. Graduates in law, policing, criminology, law enforcement, forensic investigation and IT may be considered for placement within the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as the Hawks, detective and forensic services and crime intelligence.

Relevant fields extend across Law, Policing, Criminology, Law Enforcement, Forensic Investigation, and Information Technology. The targeted recruitment process also seeks to identify suitably qualified young people from underrepresented racial groups who meet the prescribed requirements.
Rigorous Vetting Ensures Recruits Possess Resilience and Integrity
Candidates who meet the initial screening face a rigorous vetting and evaluation process. Every applicant undergoes physical fitness tests, psychometric and integrity examinations, medical evaluations, and interviews.
These assessments are designed to ensure those selected possess the physical fitness, mental resilience, discipline and integrity required to serve and protect the people of South Africa.

Training duration depends on the recruit’s prior educational background. Recruits holding a relevant National Qualifications Framework Level 6 or higher qualification complete a six-month training programme at a SAPS academy. Those without such qualifications undergo a nine-month basic training curriculum.
Step-by-Step Online Application Process and Fraud Warnings
Applications must be submitted digitally through the official SAPS eRecruitment portal under reference number TRA26/27. Applicants must create an account, verify their email address using a security code, and follow the step-by-step process on the portal.
Police authorities issued strong warnings regarding recruitment scams, emphasizing that applications are entirely free and positions are never for sale. Applicants must remain vigilant against fraudsters who may demand money in exchange for employment or promise to influence the recruitment process,
Van Wyk cautioned, as cited by TimesLIVE. Anyone encountering demands for payment should report the incident to the SAPS Crime Stop line at 08600 10111.
