“The history of modern art is a history of psychological warfare.” The sentence tears you out of the typical pose of dawning contemplation, here in the Berlin studio of artist Christopher Kulendran Thomas. On the walls of the old warehouse hang large-format oil paintings of wild, abstract forms on mud-colored backgrounds, applied in thick, pasty brushstrokes.
You instinctively take the usual distance and tilt your head slightly to let the works sink in and make sense of them – which is not easy, because here the epitome of modern art hangs on the wall, as one encounters in every bank lobby, on every parliamentary corridor and at every international art fair in front of a neutral background. And then Kulendran suddenly speaks of “psyops”, i.e. psychological operations – a conspiratorial-sounding term that comes from the dark triangle between the state, military and secret services.
