She was a co-founder of the Fluxus movement and leaves behind an impressive body of work including installations, drawings and paintings. Now Mary Bauermeisterin has died.

The artist and co-founder of the Fluxus movement, Mary Bauermeister, is dead. She died on Thursday morning at the age of 88, Bauermeister’s son Simon Stockhausen confirmed to the German Press Agency. The WDR reported first.

Bauermeister, who lives in Rösrath near Cologne, was awarded the first art prize of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2021 for her “outstanding artistic oeuvre”. In addition to drawings and paintings, her universal oeuvre primarily included object images and installations as well as landscape designs.

After studying in Ulm and Saarbrücken, Bauermeister settled in Cologne in the mid-1950s. Her studio was considered the birthplace of the Fluxus movement. Bauermeister later moved to New York, where she celebrated artistic success.

In Germany she was long overshadowed by the famous composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, to whom she was married between 1967 and 1973. (dpa)
