Artists and models: until death (or art) do them part

Picasso, Matisse, Delacroix… The artist and the model is a recurring theme in Art History. It is not possible to understand it without painters, sculptors, draftsmen, engravers…, but neither without its models and muses, most of whom are women. In many cases it is these who inspired their masterpieces and those would hardly have achieved fame and glory without them. Although the traditional concept of the muse as a passive model, at the mercy of an older and influential artist, has been replaced by that of an emancipated muse, an active agent, providing emotional support, intellectual energy, creativity and assistance to artists.
