Ashi Anand: Market Uptrend & Growth Revival Forecast

Indian Equity Markets Poised for Growth After 18-Month Consolidation

A prolonged period of stagnation in Indian equity markets may be nearing its end, according to a leading investment firm. IME Capital’s Founder & CEO notes a shift in momentum driven by strengthening economic indicators and a more optimistic outlook across sectors.

After nearly 18 months of sideways movement, the Indian equity market is showing signs of an impending upward phase. This consolidation, previously shaped by headwinds like weak growth, high interest rates, and geopolitical uncertainty, is gradually giving way to a more favorable narrative.

Growth Indicators Strengthen

“Growth has started to come back,” a senior official stated. “After many quarters, there were some signs of optimism coming up from the recent quarterly earnings season. While you are still seeing single-digit growth on the Nifty, the broader markets will have about a 14-15% overall earnings growth. More importantly, commentary in terms of an advancement in the growth outlook were seeming a bit relatable.”

Domestic Consumption and Benign Global Factors

The potential for market growth is further bolstered by improving global conditions and a revival in domestic consumption. With expectations for US Federal Reserve rate adjustments turning less aggressive, and early signs of increased spending within India, the stage is set for a new upward trajectory. However, two key risks remain: the ongoing negotiations for a US-India trade deal and continued pressure on the Indian rupee. A positive resolution to either of these issues could substantially boost investor confidence.

Investment Strategy: Focus on Domestic Themes

IME Capital’s current investment strategy, a flexicap approach, is heavily weighted towards domestic themes. The digital ecosystem represents a core overweight position, followed by a considerable allocation to banks. The firm identifies value across the financial sector, highlighting both established “compounder” stocks like ICICI Bank, Kotak Bank, and HDFC Bank, and also undervalued names such as SBI, Axis Bank, and IDFC First Bank. Improved net interest margins (NIM) and asset quality suggest a stronger earnings outlook for lenders.

The firm is deliberately reducing exposure to global markets. “We are staying away from things linked to global,” one analyst noted. “We just believe there is a lot of uncertainty around trade, around the currency, around different multiple moving parts.” Exposure to capital goods has also been reduced over the past year due to increased valuations, with the firm awaiting stronger underlying growth momentum.

Sector-Specific Caution

While optimistic the firm maintains a cautious stance on certain sectors. Global cyclicals are viewed with skepticism due to ongoing trade and currency uncertainties. The pharmaceutical industry faces challenges related to declining profits linked to the drug Revlimid for several generic manufacturers. Details Technology (IT) remains an area of watchfulness, given economic uncertainty in the US, slowing growth, and potential disruption from artificial intelligence. Even though structurally sound, capital goods are facing valuation headwinds.

Digital Concentration and Moat-Driven Companies

IME Capital acknowledges a high concentration in its digital investments, with five stocks comprising 90% of the portfolio. This is not due to a lack of options, but rather a result of stringent filters focused on identifying companies with strong competitive moats and long-term dominance. The firm anticipates that upcoming digital IPOs could offer opportunities to diversify exposure without compromising on quality.

The firm also continues to favor classic “moat-driven” companies like Asian Paints, IndiGo, and Page Industries, believing their fundamental business advantages remain intact. However, inflated valuations – a result of high demand for a limited number of high-quality stocks in recent years – could keep these stocks under pressure as earnings normalize.
