Aggies Dominate Seattle 5-1 Behind Stellar Pitching from Ashley Sawai
A commanding pitching performance from Ashley Sawai propelled the UC Davis Aggies to a 5-1 victory over Seattle in their opening game at the UNLV Desert Classic on Thursday. The Aggies demonstrated both offensive patience and defensive strength, setting a positive tone for their tournament run.
Early Lead Sets the Tone
UC Davis wasted no time establishing control, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. The Aggies capitalized on their disciplined approach at the plate, combining hits with a walk and two hit by pitches to jump ahead 2-0. This early offensive burst provided a crucial foundation for Sawai’s dominant performance.
Sawai Shines in the Circle
Ashley Sawai proved to be a force to be reckoned with, allowing just three hits and striking out five batters across six innings. While Seattle managed to narrow the gap with a home run in the bottom of the first, Sawai quickly regained composure, striking out the side and effectively silencing the Seattle offense for the next five frames.
“She was absolutely dominant from the start,” a team spokesperson commented. “Her ability to settle in after the home run was really impressive.”
Aggies Extend Their Advantage
The Aggies continued to build their lead in the third inning, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Amanda Baldwin that scored Rylee Reeves and Kaylin Phillips. This extended the UC Davis advantage to 5-1, providing a comfortable cushion for Sawai. Alyssa Dethlefson also contributed to the offensive effort, hitting her first double of the season. Keira Brady led the Aggies at the dish, going 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Sawai continued to stifle Seattle’s offense over the final four frames, allowing only two additional base runners. In the seventh inning, Ellena Ediss entered the game to secure the final outs, completing the Aggies’ decisive victory.
