The inspiration for “BFF Diary” struck filmmaker Thota during a moment of reflection.While considering advice received, a purple diary from her childhood instantly captured her attention and became the foundation for her film. The narrative follows two inseparable elementary school best friends in the suburbs of bangalore,India,as they navigate the complexities of a changing friendship when one moves away.
“‘BFF Diary’ ended up being an ode to childhood, friendship and big life changes,” Thota explains. She further elaborated on her artistic approach, stating, “I really wanted to explore personal and iconic locations from my childhood spent in Bangalore, India, and I try to use a lot of warm lighting, saturated colors, and familiar imagery to really invite viewers to reflect on their own friendships and the bonds that last through their lives.”
Both filmmakers, according to observations at the festival, began their projects with stories rooted in their own lives-memories, myths, and the imaginative sparks that initially drew them to art. This approach highlights a common thread: storytelling serves as both a revisiting of the past and a launchpad for new creative endeavors.
One filmmaker reflected on the importance of staying connected to her younger self, stating, “That little version of Annika, playing with my Littlest Pet Shop toys and my little camcorder, I keep her with me all the time.” This sentiment underscores the idea that maintaining a clear vision is crucial, even amidst the logistical challenges of filmmaking.
