In the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society An article was published in which scientists said that they had discovered two new galaxies with polar rings.
It is specified that the discovery was made by an international group of astronomers. According to their study, new galaxies may be more common objects than previously thought.
The two discoveries represent systems that consist of a lenticular galaxy, which is intermediate between elliptical and spiral galaxies, and a polar ring. The polar ring, in turn, consists of gas and stars.
“Further study of these discoveries will provide insight into the origins of these galaxies,” the article notes.
