Houston, Texas – January 5, 2026 – The clock is ticking for several key players as Major League Baseball’s offseason moves enter a critical phase, with posting windows closing and roster decisions looming.
Posting Windows Nearing Closure for Okamoto, Takahashi

Two Japanese stars have until Sunday at 4pm CT to secure MLB contracts.
The posting periods for infielder Kazuma Okamoto and right-hander Kona Takahashi conclude Sunday at 4pm Central Time, meaning both players must sign with a Major League Baseball team by then to make the jump from Nippon Professional Baseball this year. Okamoto, the more prominent of the two, is widely expected to land a contract; he’s been linked to the Padres, Angels, Pirates, Cubs, Blue Jays, and Red Sox and offers a compelling blend of power and plate discipline. Takahashi, however, reportedly has at least one MLB offer but may opt to remain in NPB if the financial terms aren’t favorable, a perfectly reasonable decision given his value in Japan.
Takahashi is viewed as a potential back-of-the-rotation arm in the majors, possessing less upside than fellow countryman Tatsuya Imai.
Astros Maneuvering to Accommodate Imai
Speaking of Imai, the right-hander reportedly agreed to a three-year, $54 million deal with the Astros yesterday, with opt-out opportunities after the 2026 and 2027 seasons. While the deal hasn’t been officially announced, it’s expected to be finalized today before Imai’s posting window closes at 4pm CT. To make room for Imai on the 40-man roster, Houston will likely designate a player for assignment, though a minor trade – similar to the Dodgers’ recent move involving outfielder Esteury Ruiz – isn’t out of the question.
Earlier this week, the Dodgers traded Ruiz to the Marlins for a prospect not currently on their 40-man roster.
DFA Limbo Set to End
With the New Year underway, the MLB offseason is returning to its normal rhythm, meaning the waiver wire freeze implemented over the holidays is expected to lift soon. This will resolve the situations of ten players currently in DFA limbo, who will either be outrighted to the minors, granted free agency, or claimed by another club. Among those awaiting resolution are former top prospect Marco Luciano and 2024 Guardians playoff contributor Jhonkensy Noel.
What happens to players designated for assignment? They have several options: they can be outrighted to the minor leagues, elect free agency, or be claimed by another team.
What’s next for this group of players as teams finalize their rosters for the upcoming season?
