Asturias was the autonomous community that grew the least in the second quarter of the year, both in comparison with the previous quarter (0.1%) and with the same period in 2022 (0.8%). This is indicated by the estimates of the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (Airef), made based on the progress published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In interannual terms, the Balearic Islands was the region that presented the greatest increase in GDP, followed by the Canary Islands, with increases of 3.6% and 3.1%, respectively, higher than the growth of Spain as a whole (1.8%). They also had the greatest dynamism in the country compared to the first quarter, with respective increases of 1.1% and 0.9%. In this case, the national GDP rose by 0.4% on average.

The Airef data reveals that Asturias is one of the four Spanish communities that have not yet reached the level of GDP it had in the fourth quarter of 2019, before the outbreak of the covid pandemic. Specifically, the Asturian economy is still 0.9% below. The others are the Balearic Islands (-2%), Catalonia (-1.1%) and the Basque Country (-0.1%).

According to the latest forecasts from the Unicaja research service, Asturias will not recover the level of GDP prior to covid until the first months of 2024. Airef, for its part, points out that the Spanish economy as a whole has already done so.

On the other hand, a report from the Foundation for Applied Economics Studies (Fedea) indicates that Asturias obtained a positive balance of 673 million euros in the regional financing system of 2021, the last year analyzed. The autonomous communities that contributed the most resources were Madrid (with a negative balance of 6,313 million), Catalonia (-2,168 million) and the Balearic Islands (-334 million).
