In October, Asturias ranked as the third autonomous community with the lowest inflation (3.1% in the interannual rate, four tenths below the Spanish average) after falling one tenth compared to September and thus breaking three consecutive months of increases. Only Aragón (2.5%) and Extremadura (3%) remain below Asturias.

The decrease in the interannual rate occurred due to the base effect (the comparison with the behavior of prices in October 2022), given that in a monthly rate, the CPI (consumer price index) increased in Asturias 0.3 points compared to last September, the same thing that happened in Spain as a whole.

The final data on Spanish inflation in October (3.5% interannual rate) confirmed the estimate advanced at the beginning of the month by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), with which the general price index remained at the same level September, while core inflation (which excludes energy and fresh food) fell six tenths in Spain, standing at 5.2% and adding three consecutive months of decline.

In Asturias, the underlying also fell six tenths and stood at 4.7%, five tenths below the Spanish average and the second lowest rate in the country, after Aragon. October was the second consecutive month of decline in inflation considered basic in the Principality.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages have been decisive in the relatively more benign behavior of prices in Asturias because, although they still show a year-on-year increase of 8.8%, it is the third lowest increase in the country (after Aragon and Cantabria) and consolidates two months below double digits. In March, food became more expensive in Asturias at rates of 17.6%, exactly double that of last month.

Even so, there are still very inflationary foods in the region, such as oils and fats (46.4%), pork (16%) and beef (14.1%), eggs (14.3%), milk ( 10.4%), food preparations (11%) and mineral water, soft drinks and juices (10.1%).

Housing expenses (-8.5%) have contributed to containing the cost of living, mainly due to the lower cost of heating, lighting and water (-19%) compared to twelve months earlier.

In other items of family spending there are increases, such as hospitality (5.2%), communications (3.2%), household goods (2.5%) and medicine (0.9%), but in all of these Asturias is the second or third communication where they increase the least. Conversely, it is the fourth where prices for clothing and footwear (2.2%) and transportation (2.1%) skyrocket the most, and the third in the case of alcoholic beverages (8.1%).
