At least 624 people living on the streets or in temporary accommodation structures died in 2022, a stable figure compared to the previous year (620). These are the figures from a report published Friday by “The dead of the street”, a collective of volunteers who try to find the identity of the deceased or give them one, and notify families when there is any left.

87% of these people were men, more of whom lived on the streets and for longer periods. Women died at 46 years old on average, men at 51, a gap in life expectancy of almost 40 years with the general population, since women died in France in 2022 on average at 85 years old. This “very great prematurity” shows the extreme fragility of these men and women living in trying conditions.

This difference can be explained by “the presence of certain diseases more frequent in women than in men”, specifies the report, indicating that they are also hospitalized more often before their death than men. And women are slightly more likely than men to end their lives in a place of care (38% compared to 31% of men), also corresponding to the fact that they are more numerous than men to be in accommodation structures. . But public spaces are the most frequent place of death, for 34% of men and 21% of women.

One in five deaths is linked to a violent death (attack, accident, suicide) and one in seven to an illness. In 2021, 42% of the 620 deaths recorded occurred in Île-de-France.

The number of homeless people in France has doubled in ten years, with more than 330,000 people according to the latest count from the Abbé Pierre Foundation in 2022. More and more women, families and minors are on the streets.

For 20 years, the Morts de la rue collective has been striving to restore an identity to support missing homeless people. Starting tomorrow Saturday, and for three weeks, the names of the 9,500 people who have died on the streets since all this time will be displayed in tribute on the gates of the Buttes-Chaumont park, in the 19th arrondissement of Paris.
