The port of Wajima, on the west coast, suffered significant damage on Monday. But the tsunami of magnitude initially feared did not materialize.

Run ! » From mid-afternoon on Monday, these orders flashed in a loop on Japanese television channels, disrupting this moment of absolute tranquility that is January 1 in the Archipelago. At 4:10 p.m., a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred off the coast of Ishikawa Prefecture (west coast of Japan), the effects of which were felt hundreds of kilometers away. The quake was followed by a “major” alert at tsunami along the coast, leading, a few minutes after the impact, to fear a wave up to 5 meters high and prompting the inhabitants of this part of the country to run and take refuge on the heights, in the shelters provided for this purpose. The evening was marked by an initial assessment of four deaths and details of the damage caused by the earthquake, with the spirit of general mobilization that the Japanese can show in such a case.
