My father had turned up the collar of his Canadian jacket, and the big buttons on Mom’s coat were disappearing under the plump meanders of her scarf. It was freezing. We were going to midnight mass. I was an altar boy. Tucked into my anorak, a woolen hat reaching down to my eyebrows, my eyes erased by new glasses even thicker than the previous ones, I was more than ever that “tadpole with glasses” that my friends mocked in the playground .

The moon lit the street that led to the church, leaving the others to the hands of darkness. She does as she pleases, the moon, she shows herself, she doesn’t show herself, she shines her paintbrush on the roofs or not. She is facetious, the moon, a little crazy, like Brigitte Fontaine.
