Time.news – A myth that still excites both for his amazing vocal skills and for the events of an intense and troubled life that ended at just 54 years of age. “A complete theatrical phenomenon: musical and dramatic”, as Luchino Visconti, who directed her in many great titles, said of her: “La sonnambula”, “La traviata”, “Anna Bolena”.

On the centenary of her birth, Maria Callas, stage name of the Greek artist Maria Anna Kalogheropoùlou, will be celebrated on Thursday 30 November at 8.30 pm at the Teatro Massimo with a concert organized in collaboration with the Sicilian Hellenic Community Trinacria and under the aegis of the president of Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

“A woman and a revolutionary singer – said the superintendent Marco Betta – extraordinarily contemporary and always ahead of her time”.

On the podium of the Orchestra, Alessandro Cadario, an eclectic conductor, main guest of the Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano since 2016 and of the seasons of the main Italian and international opera companies and festivals, conducts. She sings the soprano Myrtò Papatanasiu, one of the most sought-after voices on the international scene, awarded the prestigious “Maria Callas Debut Artist of the Year” award in 2012 for her debut as Violetta (La traviata).

The concert program pays homage to the most famous roles played by Callas, starting from the French repertoire, with the aria of Faust’s jewels, then moving on to Verdi, with arias from Trovatore and La Traviata, and to Puccini, with Bohème and Tosca, until concluding with a touching homage to the Greek world, with Ravel’s Five Greek Popular Songs, presented not in French but in the original text, and Marina by Theodorakis. In fact, Maria Callas was always proud of her Greek identity, which made her love roles such as Iphigenia by Gluck and Medea (in Cherubini’s opera, but also in the film directed by Pasolini).

At the Teatro Massimo in Palermo Maria Callas was present twice: in 1949 she played Brunhilde in Richard Wagner’s The Valkyrie directed by Enrico Frigerio and in 1951 she was Norma. Among the many reviews published by newspapers, that of the composer Pietro Ferro in “L’Ora del Popolo” stood out, writing: “In the recitatives and dramatic moments, Maria Callas was perfect: every accent had its right measure. The very difficult Norma’s vocality, which has the dual face of “dramatic and light soprano”, was achieved by Maria Callas with surprising technical ability. She not only performed the agility pieces admirably; but she knew how to find the color right in the play of the two timbral aspects of light and dark”.
