‘Atoms, scandal’: Compensation for the ‘Meron disaster’ families approved with offsetting benefits

by time news

The government today (Sunday) approved the outline of compensation for the families of the 45 victims of the disaster on Mount Meron, but did not eliminate in its decision the distortion according to which the families will receive half a million shekels for each person killed in the disaster – but all Social Security benefits will be cut.

According to a report on the Ynet website, the Ministry of Finance strongly opposed changing the law and preventing the offset.

Under the current law, the compensation will constitute an annual income – half a million shekels in one tax year – and therefore they will not be entitled to income supplement benefits, disability, alimony and the like.

The Ministry of Justice and the National Insurance Institute, which will be forced to cut benefits immediately, support new legislation, but the Ministry of Finance fears advances in the case of compensation payments in other cases and opposes changing the law.

According to the report on Ynet, there have been lengthy discussions to find a solution to the problem that has arisen, but for now the government has approved the outline – and no legislation has been decided on that will prevent the offsetting of benefits.

Rami Hod, CEO of the Berl Katzenelson Foundation, is furious at the reduction in Social Security benefits from the compensation for the families of the Meron disaster victims:

This proposal is opaque and contrary to all social and moral logic, and even contradicts the outline of compensation for victims of civil disasters that appears in a law recently passed by MK Efrat Reitan, with the support of all House factions.

“The Ministry of Finance, which has hitherto halted the debate on compensating the families of the dead, is now trying to save a few pennies on their backs through convoluted wording, instead of giving them what they deserve. Under no circumstances should such an offer pass. “
