Three people were killed Thursday morning, and several others injured, in a gun attack on a bus stop in west Jerusalem, according to a new report from the Israeli police. This attack comes as the truce between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas was extended at the last minute on Thursday morning for a seventh day. This attack, carried out according to the police by “two residents of East Jerusalem” occupied and annexed by Israel.

“Two terrorists who came by car and armed one with an M-16 and the other with a pistol” opened fire around 7:40 a.m. (0540 GMT), Jerusalem police director said , Doron Torgeman, to the press at the scene of the attack. Magen David Adom (Mada), the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross, identified one of the two dead as “a young woman of 24 years old”. Mada first located the attack in East Jerusalem, occupied and annexed by Israel, before specifying that it took place “at the entrance to Jerusalem” (West).

Hamas-affiliated attackers

The two attackers, brothers in their thirties affiliated with Hamas who had in the past been incarcerated by Israel according to the police, “were killed quickly by two soldiers who were not on duty and a civilian who shot at them,” said the police in a press release. Footage posted online shows two men getting out of a white car and opening fire before being shot dead.

Two weeks ago, an Israeli soldier was killed and five members of the Israeli security forces injured in an attack on a checkpoint separating Jerusalem from the occupied West Bank, an attack claimed by the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas. The three attackers were shot dead.

Arriving overnight in Tel Aviv, American Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said before his meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog that the attack was a reminder of “the terrorist threat faced on a daily basis by Israel”. Isaac Herzog lamented “another example of the situation we find ourselves in, the endless war we are waging against terrorist organizations, particularly Hamas.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated in a statement the two soldiers and the civilian who intervened at the scene of the attack. “My government will continue to expand the distribution of weapons to citizens,” he assured.
