TikTok is planning to compete directly with the photo giant Instagram. The Chinese company is working on its own photo-sharing app.
The rumors about the project have been circulating online for a month after attentive users discovered clues in TikTok’s code. Now the suspicion seems to be confirmed: Numerous TikTok users have received messages that read: “TikTok Notes, a new app for photo posts, is coming soon. Your previous and future public TikTok photo posts will be displayed on TikTok Notes. “
Although no specific information has been given regarding the launch date of the new app, it can be assumed that it will initially be tested in the USA and other countries. So far, no similar information is known from Germany. In contrast to Instagram, TikTok has so far mainly offered posting videos.
The planned foray into the photography business could significantly change the social media landscape. However, Instagram – namely its parent company Meta – has already copied some functions from TikTok and successfully integrated them, such as the short video format called Reels.
Reward app is intended to encourage users to be active
But it’s not just the planned photo app that’s causing a stir: According to the portal “The Information”, TikTok is also preparing a reward app, which is internally called “Coin App” and externally “TikTok Lite”. This is intended to encourage users to watch videos and invite friends to register.
The reward is points that can be converted into digital gifts for creators. It remains to be seen whether TikTok can prevail with its ambitious plan or whether the project will suffer a fate like BeReal or even the discontinued TikTok Now project.
