Felix Auger-Aliassime’s highly anticipated return to the Nitto ATP Finals, his first appearance as 2022, began with a 7-5, 6-1 defeat against the in-form Jannik Sinner in Turin.The match was marred by a potential left calf strain sustained late in the first set, while landing from a serve at 5-6. Despite visibly affecting his movement, Auger-Aliassime completed the match and subsequently sought to allay concerns about a serious injury.
“No, not dangerous. I’m not too concerned. He’s an amazing player. You have to give credit when the guy is just better than you,” Auger-Aliassime stated following the match. “Today he was better than me.I’ll get ready for the next one.”
Sinner’s First-Set Dominance
Auger-Aliassime initially matched Sinner’s intensity in the opening set, but the Italian quickly gained control. Despite the physical setback and the loss, Auger-Aliassime emphasized his mental resilience. He framed the competition as a “tennis battle,” rather than a war, highlighting his focused and driven approach.
“I’ve never been [afraid] as we’re not going to war,” auger-Aliassime explained. “I do put in my mind that it’s a battle, a tennis battle. I’m very focused, very driven. [I’ve] never been afraid of a tennis match. [You’re] more focused when you play at this level, everything needs to be very disciplined and very precise from the first moments.”
Growing Rivalry and Upcoming Matches
Monday’s match marked the fourth encounter between Auger-Aliassime and Sinner as August, a period during which sinner has consistently demonstrated his superiority. The pair previously faced off in the final of the rolex Paris Masters just eight days prior, with sinner also emerging victorious in that contest.
Auger-Aliassime acknowledged the high level of play required to compete with Sinner, stating, “I’ve been playing him a few times this year, so I knew what to expect. It’s more like when you play this top level, you have to be extremely good.That’s it.”
