Despite being one of the months with the least commercial volume, August has closed its 23 business days with 55,957 sales of passenger cars and SUVs, which represents an increase of 7.8% compared to the same month of 2022, when the threshold of 50,000 was barely exceeded.

In the accumulated of the year, 642,580 cars have been sold. Or what is the same, an increase of 20.5% in percentage terms. According to the national association of vehicle manufacturers, Anfac, this is “good data, but we must not forget that we come from a year in which only 814,000 passenger cars were sold.”

The employers also recall that the records are still far from the figures prior to the pandemic, specifically 27% less in accumulated terms.

By purchasing channels, the bulk has been monopolized by individuals, who obtained 29,823 vehicles, 19.5% more than a year ago. Legal persons, for their part, acquired 22,945, 5.7% more than in 2022.

Rental professionals saw the only setback –and a considerable one–, with only 3,189 registered vehicles, 39.2% less than a year ago. However, this is mainly due to the fact that these businesses are provisioned before the arrival of the holidays.

So far this year, individual buyers total 268,931 (+15.2%); companies, 259,107 (+15.5%) and rent-a-car, 75,292 (+52.1%).

Anfac highlights that “every month of 2023 the figures of last year have been exceeded. Although the market is growing at a double-digit rate so far this year, it has slowed down in recent months, which leads us to think that inflation, high interest rates and uncertainty due to a lack of government may slow down purchases in the last quarter.”

The pure electric vehicle advances despite its reduced volumes. In August the market closed with 5,299 registrations, 77.3% more than a year ago. Of these, most were passenger cars, specifically 3,711, representing an increase of 151.9%. In the annual aggregate, this translates into 47,353 units (+47.6%), of which 32,827 are passenger cars (+79.4%).

Plug-in hybrids, for their part, are also showing growth, but being a more accepted technology in the Spanish market, this is more moderate than compared to zero emissions. Specifically, in August 3,387 models were sold with this propulsion (+21.8%), of which 24 were vans (242.9%). So far this year, the total amounts to 40,478 (+33.1%), with 261 being vans (-22.6%).
