With his post, the author wanted to apologize to this woman.
As he wrote on Facebook, on Tuesday, August 20:
“An honest, heartfelt apology.
In recent days, a photo has gone viral and is being freely posted on various Facebook pages, where foolishness often reigns, along with vulgarity and raw cannibalism. In the photo – which I don’t even know whether it was taken with the subject’s knowledge – a woman is reading my latest book. Her face is not visible, only her body on a beach sun lounger. It is a great joy to see that someone is reading you by the sea, that your stories are competing, even for a lazy half hour, with the charms of summer; however, in this particular case, the joy quickly gave way to anger and shame.
Because, prompted by the title of my book, a flood of sexist and misogynistic comments pour out under the photo, as jokes or smart remarks – and well – and every time someone sends me another repost of the photo, I don’t know where to hide, and how to apologize to the woman who honored me with her reading dedication, only to become a victim of pettiness and mental ugliness.
Whoever she may be, I apologize with all my heart if my book became a reason for her to feel hurt, even for a moment. It is not difficult to be humane: we just need to think of ourselves in the place of the other, and imagine how their heart can be hurt just like ours.”
His post
Although Augustus Kortos does not mention the title of the book he refers to, the title that caused such an uproar is “Sex and How to Avoid It”.
