Climber Austin Hoyt Completes Historic Ascent of ‘The Process’ (8C+)

A remarkable feat of athleticism and mental fortitude has unfolded in the Buttermilks, as climber Austin Hoyt achieved the fifth ascent of “The Process,” a notoriously difficult 8C+ (V17) boulder problem. The accomplishment, described by the climber as “the dopest climb I have ever done,” marks a significant milestone in the world of competitive climbing.

The Buttermilks, a renowned bouldering area, continues to attract elite athletes pushing the boundaries of the sport. Hoyt’s success on “The Process” underscores the increasing level of difficulty in modern climbing and the dedication required to conquer such challenges.

A Long-Held Dream Realized

Hoyt’s journey to send “The Process” was far from immediate. He first began attempting the climb after completing “Lucid Dreaming” last season, quickly identifying the crux – the final move – as a major obstacle. “The first time I ever climbed through social distortion, which is the bottom half, I made it to the last move,” Hoyt explained. Despite repeatedly reaching this critical point, he struggled to fully commit, a mental block that ultimately prevented completion during his initial attempt.

The climber’s dedication to the project was evident, even in his downtime. “I have the poster of Daniel [Woods] on the FA over my bed, I basically look at it every single day of my life,” he revealed, highlighting the inspirational impact of the first ascentionist.

Overcoming Mental Barriers

Returning to the Buttermilks this year, Hoyt recognized the psychological component hindering his progress. He implemented a unique training strategy designed to address his fear of falling. “I told myself I will only try the last move off of a ladder, not on a rope, so I could get over the fear of falling,” he stated. This unconventional approach proved pivotal in building confidence.

Prior to the successful send, Hoyt demonstrated significant progress, completing the challenging link – the sequence leading to the final move – twice in a row. This performance fueled his optimism heading into his third session.

The Successful Ascent

With pads strategically positioned and cameras rolling, Hoyt approached “The Process” with renewed determination. “Showing up for my third session, I felt confident and extremely psyched,” he recounted. He executed the climb flawlessly, reaching the final move and, this time, holding on. The culmination of months of effort and a strategic mental shift resulted in a historic achievement.

Hoyt’s ascent of “The Process” is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of mental preparation in elite athletic performance. It solidifies his position among the world’s leading boulderers and inspires climbers to push their own limits.
