NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team concluded its regular season with a hard-fought 48-43 victory over Lipscomb Friday night at Allen Arena. The win caps a season of growth for the Governors, who finished with a 16-12 overall record and an 8-10 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play. This Austin Peay basketball result sets the stage for the upcoming ASUN Tournament, where the Governors will look to build on this momentum.
The game was a back-and-forth affair from the opening tip, with both teams trading baskets throughout the first quarter. Three ties marked the early stages, as Austin Peay and Lipscomb battled for control. A jumper by McKayla Miller leveled the score at seven with three minutes remaining in the quarter, but a quick response from Lipscomb, fueled by layups from Taylor Bowen and Miller, gave the Bisons an 11-7 advantage. Free throws by Anovia Sheals helped close the gap, leaving Lipscomb leading 11-9 at the end of the first frame.
Rucker’s Three-Pointers Spark Governors’ Second-Quarter Surge
The second quarter saw Austin Peay regain the lead, largely thanks to the sharp shooting of Jade Rucker. Rucker connected on four three-pointers in the quarter, providing a significant offensive boost for the Governors. Back-to-back threes from Rucker gave Austin Peay a 15-14 lead early in the frame. Yet, Lipscomb answered with a free throw from Hannah Richardson, tying the game at 15. A scoring drought then settled over both teams, lasting from the 7:08 mark until a jumper by Bowen broke the silence with 2:41 remaining. Another pair of three-pointers, this time from Kyra Perkins and Rucker, extended the Governors’ lead to four points with under two minutes to play. Lipscomb responded with free throws to tie the game at 21, but Rucker’s clutch three-pointer at the buzzer sent Austin Peay into halftime with a 24-21 lead.
Governors Extend Lead in Third, Hold Off Bisons in Fourth
Austin Peay continued its strong play into the third quarter, opening with an 8-2 run to establish a seven-point lead at 32-25. Lipscomb chipped away at the deficit, closing the third frame trailing by just two points, 34-32. The Governors then seized control again in the fourth quarter, embarking on a 7-2 run to build their largest lead of the night, reaching 43-34 with two minutes left on the clock. Despite a late push from Lipscomb, highlighted by a three-pointer from Hope Counts that narrowed the gap to 46-41 with 11 seconds remaining, Austin Peay held on for the 48-43 victory.
