Austria Introduces Full Lockdown and Mandatory Coronavirus Vaccination

The measures against coronavirus introduced in Austria will be tightened from November 22, announced the country’s Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg. The lockdown, which has been valid for those not vaccinated against COVID-19 since last Monday, will be extended to the entire population of the country. Also, Mr. Schallenberg announced that from February 1, vaccination against coronavirus in Austria will be mandatory – this is the first such announcement in Europe.

According to the Austrian Chancellor, the restrictions will be in effect for 10 days and can be extended to a maximum of 20 days. “Despite persuasion over months, we have not been able to get enough people to get vaccinated,” he said during a press conference and accused anti-vaccines of “attacking the healthcare system” (quoted from AFP).

On the eve of a lockdown for the unvaccinated, similar to the one in effect this week in Austria, was announced in the neighboring Slovakia in the east. According to the Prime Minister of the country Eduard Heger, these restrictions are imposed for three weeks. The same measures were taken in the Czech Republic and Bavaria.

Coronavirus in Austria was detected in 1,011,465 people, 11,903 patients died, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. On Thursday, the country recorded a record for the number of people infected with coronavirus – 15 145 people.
