DECRYPTION – This practice is rarely implemented in France. A lack due to multiple factors.

This is the last of ten recommendations from the experts of the Lancet : when a patient is a victim of sudden death, a fortiori if he is under 50 years old, the practice of autopsy must be reinforced. Ideally, according to learned societies, every sudden death in a young patient should be subject to it. This is far from being the case, especially in France: “2 to 3% at most of patients who die suddenly are autopsied, so in a large proportion of cases it is not known exactly what they died of”laments Professor Eloi Marijon (HEGP, Paris).

This is not true everywhere: in Denmark for example, indicates the doctor, more than 80% of cardiac arrests in people under 50 are subject to an autopsy. But globally in the world, “more than half of sudden deaths in young people, who have arrived alive in intensive care units, remain unexplained, due to a lack of investigations”, say the experts.
