The National Green Tribunal has ordered all state and union territories to develop alternative measures, including the ‘electric cemetery system’, to prevent the burning of corpses in cemeteries, which is highly harmful to the environment.

A private organization had filed a case in the National Green Tribunal in this regard. In it, they demanded that the practice of incinerating corpses in an environmentally friendly manner be developed, saying that the burning of corpses in the cemeteries in the area where they reside was highly polluting and that it mixed with the air and created many problems.

The hearing on the petition was preceded by a session chaired by National Green Tribunal chairman AK Goyal. It instructed all state and union governments to “create alternatives to the use of gas pipes, such as running on electricity, instead of burning corpses with conventional wood.”

Their order was not carried out with the intention of hurting any religious belief, and `350 to 450 kg of logs are required to destroy a corpse. The judge clarified that the order was issued to reduce the impact on the environment and to create greater awareness among the people.
