The new home of Ramachandran, an American expatriate Malayali, and his family is in Katayirup near Kolancheri in Ernakulam district. Ramachandran, a regular reader of ManoramaOnline, is on his way to his dream home and a house feature on ManoramaOnline. He liked the house and entrusted its designer, Anoop, with the task of building his house.
He wanted a house that would have the look of the houses in America where he lives, but that would be able to cope with the climate of the country. Thus the house has an elevation that combines the colonial style with the local tropical style.
It was decided to build a new house in the country on the occasion of his daughter’s marriage. So another desire was that the public spaces should be wide enough to provide a platform for gatherings. For this, the interiors are arranged in a semi-open manner. Natural light was also emphasized in the open spaces that communicate with each other. For this, there are many skylights and vertical openings in public areas. So there is no need for daytime lighting in the common hall.
Porch, sitting room, formal living, family living, dining, kitchen, workshop and two bedrooms are on the ground floor. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, upper living, balcony and wide open terrace. The total area is 3500 square feet.
Vitrified tile in public areas. There is granite in the sitting room and wooden finished tiles in some areas. Furniture is more customized. Teak + anvil were used for it.
Bedrooms focus on storage and functionality. Attached bathroom, fitted with wardrobe and dressing space.
Kitchen cabinet in multiwood+ laminate finish. Nanowhite was spread on the counter.
The courtyard is laid with bangalore stone and grass. There is a wide open terrace at the front. This is the venue for small parties. The construction of the house progressed when the covid was on fire. At that time, due to rising prices and shortage of construction materials, the work was slightly delayed. The house took two years to complete. However, the family is happy that a dream house has come true as desired.
