Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation have intensified work on the development of different segments of the North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC).

As Day.Az reports, this was reported to Trend by the first deputy chairman of the Committee on Industrial Policy, Innovation and Trade of St. Petersburg, Alexander Sitov, following negotiations in Baku.

“There are several segments of cooperation with Azerbaijan regarding the activation of the North-South international transport corridor. In fact, this corridor begins in the Baltic Sea, near St. Petersburg, and its branches end in Iran and can reach India. Part of the route goes through Azerbaijan along land (roads and railways) and along the Caspian Sea, and we agreed to work out cooperation zones,” Sitov noted.

According to him, the Russian Federation is currently modernizing its Caspian port of Olya (year-round shipping) to increase cargo turnover along the North-South international transport corridor.

It should be noted that in the port of Olya it is planned to create a new cargo area with an area of 250 hectares: the 1st stage involves the construction of six berths by 2027 for a cargo turnover of up to 6 million tons, the 2nd stage – the development of capacities up to 12 million tons, the 3rd – up to 50 million tons.

Also, under the North-South project, the construction of highways, transport interchanges, bridges and engineering structures is being intensified.

“I think Azerbaijan will be interested in the new initiatives of the Russian Federation on the North-South international transport corridor,” Sitov emphasized.

Let us recall that in 2000 it was in St. Petersburg that the decision was made to create this ITC; the agreement on this corridor was ratified by 14 countries of the world.

In the railway segment of the MTK, it is expected that the Rasht (Iran) – Astara (Iran-Azerbaijan border) section will be created, for which VTB Bank (RF) has given a loan to Iran in the amount of more than 1 billion euros.
