At the plenary session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, Sargis Khandanyan, a member of the delegation of the National Assembly to the Euronest PA, the chairman of the standing committee on foreign relations, congratulated the Ukrainian and Moldovan partners on the decision to start negotiations on EU membership, as well as the Georgian partners on receiving the status of EU member candidate.

“The latest decision undoubtedly brings the European Union closer to our region, presenting a new reality and many opportunities.

During the last two years, relations between Armenia and the European Union have improved significantly, both qualitatively and in terms of pace. I express my gratitude to our colleagues in the European Parliament for appreciating the efforts and aspirations of the Armenian government in this regard, as well as for their steadfast support for our democracy and independence.

The deployment of the European long-term civilian monitoring mission in Armenia not only strengthens Armenia’s security architecture, but also expands the opportunities for cooperation in the security sector. I am optimistic that soon a decision will be made regarding the access to the European Peace Instrument.

We also strive to start the dialogue on visa liberalization as soon as possible and remain committed to the implementation of our part of the work within the framework of CEPA, as well as to the implementation of joint initiatives in the fields of communication, energy and other fields,” he said.

Khandanyan noted that Armenia also expects the continuous and more active participation of the European Union in the process of regulating relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“In this regard, I express my gratitude for the resolution adopted by this parliament on March 13, which refers to closer EU-Armenia ties and the need for a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia. This resolution accurately reflects the developing dynamics and positive changes in relations between Armenia and the European Union, as well as the principles of the peace process and negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Article 16 of this resolution clearly formulates the principles that should be the basis of the settlement and future peace agreement.

My colleague has already talked about those principles. I just want to add that these principles were agreed upon and approved by the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan during the last two years of negotiations. At the highest level, Armenia has reaffirmed its commitment to these fundamental principles of early settlement of relations. Unfortunately, Azerbaijan continues to present additional demands to Armenia and hinder the progress of the peace process.

It is extremely important to emphasize that adherence to the principles laid down in the Almaty Declaration is objective not only in the context of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but also of fundamental importance for respecting the territorial integrity of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova,” said Sargis Khandanyan.
