Turkic scholar Varuzhan Geghamyan writes: “Aliyev was re-elected. OK, what about later?
In yesterday’s elections, the President of Azerbaijan I. Aliyev was re-elected with the slogan “A victorious leader for a victorious nation”, without any extraordinary efforts, receiving around 92% of the votes. At first glance, nothing special. However, this election was different from the previous ones.
Considering the fact that the main goal of Alev’s foreign and domestic policy is the declared continuous struggle against Armenia and Armenians and unification with Turkey (the Turkic world), his re-election gives internal legitimacy to this Azerbaijani policy.
This, in turn, means that Azerbaijan will continue its aggression against Armenia with full and new momentum, aiming first of all to neutralize Armenia’s resistance capabilities, which will allow to facilitate new territorial conquests (first of all in the directions of Gegharkunik, Vayots Dzor and Syunik).
There is not even a word about peace or neighborly relations with Armenia.”
