Babysitter with Prior Sexual Assault Conviction Suspected of New Crimes, Raising Childcare Safety Concerns

A man previously convicted of sexual assault is now under investigation for allegedly raping a young child in his care, prompting a probe into the vetting processes of online childcare platforms and raising serious questions about the safety of vulnerable children.

A mother from the Lille metropolis presented herself at a police station on December 29 to report alleged acts of violence against her son, perpetrated by a babysitter she had found through an internet-based childcare service. According to Lille prosecutor Samuel Finielz, the suspect had already been sentenced in Nice in 2020 to five years of imprisonment for a sexual assault against a 15-year-old minor.

Prior Conviction and Monitoring Failures

The initial sentence included a five-year period of socio-judicial monitoring, which specifically prohibited the suspect from engaging in any activity involving regular contact with minors. However, in May 2025, authorities learned the suspect was actively working as a babysitter, leading to a strengthening of the monitoring terms with a complete ban on contact with minors. Despite this, the suspect allegedly continued to provide childcare services.

“The investigation also aims to clarify the conditions under which the person concerned was able to offer his services,” Finielz stated, noting the suspect was registered in the national automated judicial file of perpetrators of sexual offenses since his 2020 conviction. This raises critical questions about the effectiveness of systems designed to prevent individuals with a history of sexual offenses from accessing vulnerable populations.

Expanding Investigation and Potential Victims

Currently, investigators believe “around thirty families” may have utilized the suspect’s babysitting services. Authorities have already contacted some of these families, and suspicions have been raised regarding two additional cases, though no criminally reprehensible facts have yet been established.

Following the rape complaint filed on December 29, the suspect was taken into pre-trial detention and subsequently sentenced to two years in prison for violating the terms of his socio-judicial monitoring. The investigation into the alleged rape continues, with authorities working to determine the full extent of the suspect’s actions.

Increased Scrutiny of Childcare Vetting Processes

The case has prompted renewed focus on the safety of childcare arrangements facilitated through online platforms. Nearly 3,000 individuals have been excluded from the child protection and young child care sectors following the widespread implementation of criminal background checks in October, according to High Commissioner for Children Sarah El Haïry. However, the number of these individuals who were already employed or in the application process remains unspecified.

This incident underscores the urgent need for robust vetting procedures and ongoing monitoring to protect children from potential harm. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are committed to clarifying the circumstances that allowed this individual to potentially endanger more children.
