Shimla Students Master Badminton Smashes in Winter Sports Program
A comprehensive winter sports program at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in Shimla is equipping young athletes with essential badminton skills, including the powerful smash technique. The initiative, designed for both school and college students, is fostering athletic development and providing a productive outlet during the winter break.
The program, which commenced on Wednesday, prioritizes a holistic approach to athletic training. Participants begin with rigorous fitness exercises to build stamina and strength, forming a crucial foundation for more advanced skills. Following the fitness component, instruction shifts to the fundamentals of badminton, covering proper racket grip, shuttlecock handling, and effective service techniques.
Beyond the basics, students are receiving instruction in a range of advanced maneuvers. These include tossing, shadow grafting, and the execution of a four-hand clear – a defensive shot used to return high-flying opponents’ attacks. Currently, 81 children, predominantly younger students, are actively participating in the badminton class.
“Every year, we see hundreds of students utilize the sports complex during their winter holidays,” stated a badminton coach, Sunny Papta. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to introduce them to various sports and help them develop a lifelong love of physical activity.”
The Indira Gandhi Sports Complex offers a diverse array of winter training programs, extending beyond badminton to include shooting, gym training, karate, judo, boxing, volleyball, and table tennis. This broad spectrum of options caters to a wide range of interests and abilities, ensuring that all students can find a sport that suits them.
The program underscores the importance of accessible sports education in fostering youth development and promoting a healthy lifestyle within the Shimla community.
