Baldur’s Gate 3 on Nintendo Switch 2 Remains Unlikely, Despite Larian Studios’ Desire

A recent Reddit AMA revealed that despite developer interest, a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the critically acclaimed RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently not in development, with the decision stemming from rights holder Wizards of the Coast.

The future of Baldur’s Gate 3 on the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console is uncertain, according to statements made during a question-and-answer session with Larian Studios on Reddit this past Friday. While the studio expressed a desire to bring the game to the platform, the ultimate decision rests with Wizards of the Coast, the owner of the Baldur’s Gate intellectual property.

“We would like to [release BG3 on Nintendo Switch 2],” stated Swen Vincke, a leading figure at Larian Studios, “but it wasn’t our decision.” This admission underscores a complex relationship between the independent developer and the larger entity controlling the franchise.

Industry insider NateTheHate corroborated this information, reporting that a potential port to the Switch 2 was considered late last year but ultimately shelved. “This is the sad truth,” NateTheHate noted, adding that their understanding of the situation points to a strained dynamic between Larian and Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast.

However, the outlook is brighter for Larian’s other flagship series, Divinity. The studio recently released Divinity: Original Sin 2 with a free update for new generation consoles, including the Nintendo Switch 2. During the AMA, developers confirmed they are actively considering a Switch 2 version of the next installment in the Divinity series.

“We just released Divinity: Original Sin 2 for Switch 2! We love this platform and will definitely be considering Switch 2 for the next game in the series Divinity,” a representative from Larian Studios confirmed. This suggests a more favorable path forward for future Divinity titles, as Larian Studios wholly owns the Divinity franchise.

The situation highlights the challenges independent developers face when working with established intellectual property, even after achieving massive success with a title like Baldur’s Gate 3. While fans hoping for a Switch 2 version of Baldur’s Gate 3 should not hold their breath, the future looks promising for the Divinity series on Nintendo’s next-generation console.
